Thank you for visiting the
Wetherby & District Christmas Gift Appeal page

What is it all about?

Despite what the marketing people say, Christmas for some families is not a time of unfettered joy and unrestrained giving. For some, it's a constant struggle to pay the mortgage or rent and to find money for food: Christmas presents are the last thing they can afford.

The Wetherby & District Christmas Gift Appeal, (previously known as the Wetherby & District Toy Appeal), a joint venture between Wetherby Baptist Church and Wetherby Salvation Army Community Church, gives everyone the opportunity to help such families to know that they are not forgotten.

How can I help?

We are inviting the generous people in our area to buy an extra (new) gift while they are doing their normal Christmas shopping and to donate it to the Gift Appeal.

Gifts can be taken (unwrapped, please) at a number convenient collection points around the town, including Vision Express, (just moved to Market Place) Treasures Toys (by the bridge) and our own Margins Bookshop in Church Street, which is open 10am - 2pm, Tuesday to Saturday. (See the FAQ page for more details.)

It's as simple as that!

Any suitable gift is very welcome - there's a list on the right with some suggestions - but it must be new and suitable for a child aged up to 15, and preferably not require batteries to work. We especially welcome items for the 11-15 age group. The gift doesn't need to be expensive - it's the thought that counts, the thought that someone cares.

What happens next?

We will collect all the gifts together and our partners in the Salvation Army will distribute them to suitable families in the local area in time for Christmas.

Why are we running this appeal?

Christmas is a time for sharing, as we celebrate the birth of Jesus, God's Son, given for all mankind. We want to share that good news with everyone, and this is a practical way of achieving that.

Everyone benefits: the giver by knowing they have helped a needy family, and the recipient through realising that people in their town really do care about them.
